Focus on: Likuni Phala

Our pupils at mamaLita are being fed by one of the world's leading and most inspiring charity Mary's Meals. Mary's Meals' main aim is to set up school feeding programs in communities where poverty and hunger prevent children from receiving food and education. This program has proven to be hugely successful and there has been a recordable increase in school attendance in every school in which Mary's Meals starts working.

Mary's Meals started working in Malawi in 2002 and now this country is home to the largest school feeding program. Mary's Meals provides daily meals to over 25% of all primary schools across Malawi and this year they have also started working with our early childhood development center.

Mary's Meals works closely with the local community which is fully involved in the project. The community helps prepare and serve nutritious meals every school day.

In the following pictures you can see a representative of Mary's Meals explaining to two mums and to a member of mamaLita's staff how to prepare a particular type of food known as Likuni Phala.
Likuni Phala is a type of maize and soya porridge fortified with essential vitamins and minerals. It was created by nuns in the village of Likuni just outside Lilongwe in Malawi.

Here is a simple recipe for authentic Likuni Phala!

1. Grind one cup of cooked soya beans and four cups of dried maize kernels into flour.
2. Use 1 1/2 cups of water to every 1/2 cup of flour mixture. Bring to the boil and simmer for about 15 minutes.
3. Add fruit, milk or groundnut flour to taste.
